The Audit Commission has an important role in the NHS, working in partnership with the Healthcare Commission and other national bodies. It appoints auditors to NHS trusts, primary care trusts and strategic health authorities and supports them to assess value for money locally and secure improvement as well as to audit the accounts.
We are leaders in NHS financial management issues and have a major interest in the development and implementation of Payment by Results, the growth of Foundation Trusts, the introduction of major change programmes in the NHS and the quality of corporate governance. These new developments demand new approaches from us.
The Commission's remit extends across the public sector, covering local government, housing and some aspects of the criminal justice system, giving significant scope to address "cross cutting" issues both nationally and locally. The Health Directorate takes overall national responsibility for all the Commission's health related work, including our £60million audit business in the NHS.
